What's the difference between a Market Share and a Boxed Share?
Market Shares offer free choice baskets, so you can customize your shares when you pick-up. You pick your share! Our market style shares are picked up at the Broome Regional Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9-1. Along with the farmers, a working CSA member are available to facilitate the distribution and help with any questions about quantities, storage, cooking ideas, etc.
Boxed shares are pre-packed shares that work best for folks who are looking for a mid-week CSA. Boxed shares are available on Thursdays at multiple locations throughout Binghamton, Cortland, and on-farm. Work commitments are not required.
How long is the CSA and when does it start?
Our 21 week Summer CSA season begins the second week of June and runs through October. The exact starting dates may vary due to spring weather, the 2017 season is expected to start June 8th/10th. With our flex week, members can take a week off throughout the season while still receiving all 20 weeks. Our 8 week, 4 month Winter CSA runs November through February with twice a month pick-ups (first and third weeks of the month).
Is work required with the CSA?
Work commitments are an important part of our CSA. Not only does it help to keep the cost of our shares down, it also provides a deeper connection to your food and the community that makes this farm possible. Members can choose to work either at market helping to distribute CSA shares or on-farm. At this point, we're not asking for work commitments from our boxed share members.
Working shares are another great way to become more involved in the farm, learn more about sustainable agriculture, and to offset the cost of your share. Working shares are offered on a case by case basis and can offset up to the full cost of your share. Contact us for more information.
What can I expect from a share?
Shares are offered in full, half, or small sized options. Our full share has 8-10 vegetables in each basket while our small shares offer 6-8 vegetables. Our half share offers a 10 week option and is a full sized share but on a flexible schedule (we recommend every-other week but this option works well for folks who are away for extended periods throughout the season).
What's in a share? Our CSA baskets consist of a diverse selection of organically raised vegetables that increases as the season progresses. We grow all the classics as well as some unique CSA favorites, like ground cherries and kohlrabi. Check out our previous years' newsletters for examples of what to expect. Along with our veggies, you also get a weekly newsletter with recipes, a discount at market, on-farm events, options to purchase bulk veggies, and a stronger connection to the farm and land that sustains us.
How do I pay?
While paying early is an integral part of the CSA model, when vegetable cash flow is limited but expenses are high, members can choose a variety of options to pay for their shares. Members can take advantage of our early-pay bonus to receive one free week of the CSA, to be redeemed as an off-season share or mid-season, by paying in full before March. Payment plans are available and we also accept food stamps through the farmers market. Full payment before the start of the CSA is appreciated.
A member-supported sliding scale option is available to help members afford our CSA. With facial support from our work commitment opt-out fee and through generous donations from our members, we are able to increase access to high quality, organic vegetables to members of our community. If you're interested in joining our CSA but our price is a bit out of range - please don't hesitate to contact us to take advantage of the sliding scale and/or to work out a payment plan that works for you and your family.
All of our produce is certified organic by NOFA-NY and grown right here on Shared Roots Farm.
